Litter-Robot III Automatic Self-Cleaning Litter Box Review

Cleaning cat litter is hardly anyone’s idea of a good time, so it’s not a surprise to see automatic litter boxes slowly growing in popularity. The problem? Most of these products are not exactly reliable, requiring you to maintain them on a regular basis. Since the whole point of a self-cleaning litter box is to be able to stop worrying about your cat(s) for a while, this is a big issue. Plus, with so many automatic litter boxes vying for your attention, finding the right one can be a daunting task.

In order to make cat owners’ lives slightly easier, we’ve tested some of the most popular self cleaning boxes on the market. What we’ve found out is that this category has a clear winner – the Litter-Robot III Automatic Self-Cleaning Litter Box. Whether you’re looking for quality, dependability or durability, this little guy has got you covered.

How does the Litter Robot III work?

So, how does it work? It’s actually pretty simple – once your cat has done what it needed to do and left the litter box, the Robot will start the countdown to a cleaning cycle. This will allow the waste to clump before the globe starts rotating, after which it will eventually be dropped into a drawer. Meanwhile, the sifting system will make sure clean litter remains where it is for the next use. When the globe rotates back to its position, you will hardly be able to notice any difference. The product is suited for multiple cats as well, but you’ll have to empty the waste drawers more often. The odor is barely noticeable, which is a welcome change from almost every other litter box on the market.

Features and Specifications

The Litter-Robot III has a lot of neat features built into it. The cycle timer will let you set the delay until the cleaning cycle, the control panel sensor will prevent your kids or cats from accidentally restarting the settings, and the waste indicator will remind you to clean the drawers. If your Robot is in a poorly lit room, the Night Light mode will illuminate the entire chamber. The noise is not particularly loud or annoying, but you’ll be able to tell if the globe is rotating or not. One additional tidbit that’s worth mentioning is that the Robot does not require specific supplies or additional accessories. Any clumping litter and random trash bags will do the trick, allowing you to save some money in the long run.

Measuring at 24.41 x 26.77 x 29.13 inches and weighing 23.15 pounds, the Robot is noticeably more robust than most other automatic litter boxes. The good news is that you’ll be sure it won’t get knocked over.

Pros

The biggest reason Litter-Robot III is so popular with cats and their owners is that it’s so good at what it does. Thanks to the Robot’s round shape and the rotation mechanism, you won’t have to worry about clumps getting stuck at the bottom or on the sides of the litter chamber. Plus, the litter will be spread out evenly without you having to manually even it out. This unique system is what separates this product from other automatic litter boxes, which often struggle to contain all the waste in their litter pans. Furthermore, the Robot never seems to get stuck. Emptying the drawers once or twice per week is pretty much all the maintenance expected from you.

Cons

The only real – but significant – issue with the Litter-Robot III is the initial investment required to fund it. Priced at a whopping $449-$700, this product is pretty much in a price range by itself when it comes to self-cleaning litter boxes. Then again, you get what you pay for. Automatic litter boxes are notoriously prone to breaking down, and you’re basically relying on luck to get a unit that will function properly for a prolonged period of time.

Thank you so much for making a true no-scoop and no clump kitty litter machine!!! It was an investment but man am I happy not to scoop the poo and urine clumps caused by my two cats. Amazing amazing machine!

I've had mine for about 10 months now. When it actually works, its great. You do need to maintain it per the directions. That means changing the waste bin bag every few days and periodically taking the unit apart for cleaning (per the instructions)...

The Bottom Line

While you won’t find the Litter-Robot III in a ‘best buy’ category anytime soon, the sheer reliability it provides makes the price tag worth it. If you can afford this little guy, our advice is to just go for it. In all likelihood, you’re saving yourself a lot of time and effort spent on dealing with inferior products. If you come to regret the purchase for whatever reason, you can always make use of the 90-day money-back guarantee and an 18-month warranty. Given our experiences with the Robot, we’re pretty sure you won’t have to bother with all that.

Where to buy the Litter Robot III ?

You maybe able to find at your local department store, however, we recommend first looking on Amazon.  They have a larger selection and you have the benefit of being able to compare products as well as being able to read actual customer reviews. In full disclosure we are an Amazon affiliate but would not be if we did not believe in the services they provide and the products they sell.  The intention of this review is not to convince you to purchase the Litter Robot III only to give you as much information on the unit before you decide to buy.
